On Wednesday, April 17, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation requiring the history of communism to be taught in lower classes. It marked the 63rd anniversary of the United States’ invasion of the Bay of Pigs. That, however, was an unsuccessful attempt to topple Fidel Castro’s regime in Cuba. Florida Gov Ron De Santis signs

We know that the Bay of Pigs was launched because the island of Cuba had fallen victim to communist oppression,” DeSantis stated at a press conference at the Hialeah Gardens Museum, as reported by US Today. The museum recognizes the actions of the Bay of Pigs’ Assault Brigade 2506.

We’re going to tell the truth about communism in the state of Florida. We’re going to tell the truth about the evils of communism,” DeSantis added.

What does the bill do?

According to DeSantis’ website, the bill (SB 1264), “adds to existing Communist history standards with instruction on the history of Communism in the United States and the tactics of Communist movements.” Further, it “authorizes the newly-established Institute for Freedom in the Americas at Miami Dade College to promote the importance of economic and individual freedoms as a means to advance human progress—specifically in Latin America and the Caribbean. The institute is reportedly planning a collaboration with Florida International University’s Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom. According to the website, the bill “enables the Florida Department of State, in collaboration with the Florida Department of Education, to recommend to the Legislature the creation of a Florida-based museum on the history of Communism” and “prepares students to withstand Communism indoctrination at colleges and universities. The truth will set us free,” DeSantis stated on his website. “We shall not let our youngsters live in ignorance or be taught by Communist apologists in schools. On the contrary, we will ensure that students in Florida learn the truth about the ills and perils of Communism. Florida Gov Ron De Santis signs

The Florida Governor also endorsed Donald Trump, stating that despite his ‘disagreements’, the majority of Republican primary voters want to give him another chance.

He also said that the country can’t go back to the politics being represented by his rival and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.

“I am proud to have delivered on 100 per cent of my promises and I will not stop now. It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance. Florida Gov Ron De Santis signs

While I have had disagreements with Donald Trump, such as on the coronavirus pandemic and his elevation of Anthony Fauci, Trump is superior to the current incumbent Joe Biden. That is clear,” he said in his address. Florida Gov Ron De Santis signs

He continued, “I signed a vow to support the Republican nominee, and I will keep it. He has my support because we cannot return to the old Republican guard of the past or the repackaged brand of warmed-over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents. Florida Gov Ron De Santis signs

Notably, DeSantis placed a distant second in the Iowa caucuses, but still fell far short of Trump, with only 21% support to Trump’s 51%. He was largely expected to perform poorly in New Hampshire, where former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley is regarded as the former president’s most competitive competitor, according to The Hill.

A CNN survey released on Sunday shows Trump with 50% support among potential Republican primary voters in New Hampshire, while his closest challenger, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, with 39%

DeSantis stood at just 6 per cent in the poll, below the 10 per cent minimum support he would need to win delegates there per the Republican Party’s rules.

The Florida governor launched his official bid in May with the support of a number of GOP campaign veterans in his campaign apparatus and super PAC.

DeSantis was viewed as the most credible Trump alternative after winning re-election as Florida governor in last year’s midterm elections. According to The Hill, his triumph contrasted sharply with the performance of other Republicans across the country, including several who had been endorsed by Trump. (ANI)
