Islamabad: During an interactive session with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistani business leaders asked him to open trade discussions with India to develop business and commerce, which would tremendously benefit the country’s struggling economy.

During an hour-long meeting at the Sindh CM House in Pakistan’s commercial capital on Wednesday, Karachi’s business community praised the prime minister’s determination to address economic issues but advised him to focus on achieving political stability before “turning around” the economy.

The Prime Minister met with the business community to discuss ways to boost the economy through exports, but industry leaders expressed concern that it was “almost impossible” to do business under the current circumstances, particularly with high energy costs and inconsistent government policies, according to the Dawn newspaper.

Following the prime minister’s brief statement, the house was opened for a question-and-answer session, during which business leaders expressed their appreciation for the government’s recent initiatives while making additional demands. Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif urges

They also proposed economic policies to accomplish the intended goals.

Business executives expressed alarm about the country’s political instability, even advising the Prime Minister to take the initiative as the head of government.

You’ve made a few handshakes since taking over that have yielded positive outcomes, and progress on the IMF contract is one of them,” said Arif Habib, CEO of the Arif Habib Group, a capital market behemoth. Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif urges

They also asked the prime minister to launch trade discussions with India, according to the article. Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif urges

“I recommend you do a few more handshakes.” One of them concerns commerce with India, which would tremendously benefit our economy. Second, you should (patch up) with someone from Adiala Jail. Try to correct things at that level as well; I believe you can do it. Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif urges

India’s decision evoked strong reactions from Pakistan, which downgraded diplomatic ties and expelled the Indian envoy. Pakistan has also cut off direct trade ties with India.

India has consistently told Pakistan that Jammu and Kashmir “was, is, and shall forever” be an integral part of the country.

Prime Minister Sharif avoided directly answering questions about political stability, but claimed to have taken notes on his economic growth proposals and assured him that he would soon invite businessmen from all over the country to Islamabad to meet with them “until all the issues are resolved.

The businessman also advised that Shehbaz Sharif hold negotiations with imprisoned PTI founder chairman Imran Khan, ostensibly for political stability.

Shehbaz Sharif, who came in the port city for his first visit since taking office last month, described the conference as an endeavor to listen to the “brilliant minds of business, absorb what they say, and put it into action” for a comprehensive economic growth strategy. “You are all brilliant business minds… Today, we need you to take the initiative and bring this renting enterprise to a stop. Let us focus on true industrial and agricultural growth, doubling exports over the next five years. It is challenging, but not impossible. It’s a matter of faith for me. I would listen to you and devise a strategy to put that into action. Pak PM Shehbaz Sharif urges

In a veiled reference to Bangladesh’s thriving economy, he mentioned ‘East Pakistan’, which was “once considered” a burden on the country but had achieved enormous gains in industrial progress.

I was quite young when… we were told that it’s a burden on our shoulders…Today you all know where that ‘burden’ has reached (in terms of economic growth). And we feel ashamed when we look towards them,” said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
